Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño has advised Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam to dissolve Parliament, paving the way for Belize’s general elections. The announcement was made live on television in a broadcast in the Sir Edney Caine building in the City of Belmopan just prior to the Tuesday Cabinet meeting. The Governor-General has officially proclaimed Wednesday, March 12, 2025, as the election date, following the dissolution of the National Assembly on February 11.

Briceño stated, “I have decided that now is the appropriate time to seek from you a new mandate.” Nomination Day is set for February 24, 2025.

Under Section 85(1) of the Belize Constitution, the Governor-General has the authority to set an election date within three months of Parliament’s dissolution, acting on the Prime Minister’s advice. With the date now confirmed, Belizeans will head to the polls to elect a new House of Representatives.

Political Landscape

The campaign season is officially underway, with parties rallying support and finalizing their strategies.

  • The incumbent People’s United Party (PUP) has fielded a full slate of 31 candidates.
  • The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), led by Hon. Dr. Moses “Shyne” Barrow, has also put forward 31 candidates.
  • The UDP is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with the Alliance for Democracy Party (ADP), led by Hon. Tracey Taeger, over the right to use the UDP name and its signature red color on the ballot.

What Happens When Parliament is Dissolved?

According to the Belize Constitution:

  • End of Parliamentary Sessions – All parliamentary business ceases. House members lose their seats, except for ministers, who remain in office until a new government is formed.
  • General Elections Timeline – Elections must be held within three months of dissolution. The Governor-General issues a writ of election based on the Prime Minister’s advice.
  • Caretaker Government – The Prime Minister and Cabinet continue governing in a limited capacity, avoiding major policy decisions or agreements unless necessary.
  • Formation of a New Government – After the election, the leader of the majority party is appointed Prime Minister, officially forming the next government.

With elections fast approaching, all eyes are on the campaign trail as Belize prepares for another pivotal moment in its democracy.
