Belize Declares All Clear After Tropical Storm Matthew

The National Emergency Management Organization CEO Noreen Fairweather declared the All Clear for Belize this evening after Tropical Storm Matthew passed over Belize today with minimal damage to the country. Tropical Storm Matthew dumped lots of rain on southern and northern Belize. High winds with gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour were reported in coastal areas knocking down trees, causing power outages, isolated floods, damage to piers and boats and a few blown off roofs but nothing much else.

Thousands of residents fled low lying areas including the Belize islands and local and international airlines canceled flights as a precautionary measure. Some highways and bridges were temporarily closed due to floods or fallen trees but life has resumed to normal tonight. No casualties have been reported.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow Belize Independence Day Address

Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow highlighted significant advances Belize is making in its development process and announced new initiatives to boost the economy, including major infrastructure projects and the sale of shares in the nationalized telephone company Belize Telemedia Limited to citizens of Belize.

The Prime Minister stated in his address at Independence Plaza in Belmopan on 21 September, Belize’s Independence Day, that despite the global recession, his government has been taking innovative steps to advance the economy by providing increased investment spending and concessions, incentives and credit to local businesses engaged in the productive sector.

He stated, “So it is true that our independence and sovereignty do not exist in a vacuum, isolated from international circumstances and it is equally true that those circumstances can be constrained. But whatever limiting factors there are must never be seen as any overarching deterrent. They must never set off our appreciation of the value of nationhood, of the preciousness of political autonomy, of the ultimate worth of freedom. US Military Suspends Tests Of Boeing YMQ18A Attack Drones In Belize

The US military has suspended tests of the Boeing YMQ-18A attack helicopter drone in Belize after one of the drones crashed at a testing site in western Belize according to local media reports monitored in Belize. The Belize government invited the US military to test the military drones in Belize and test flights began in late August. Local residents have complained about the testing of military aircraft in the pristine Mountain Pine Ridge of Belize which is a protected area and home to several tourism resorts. [Read more...]

Hurricane Earl Diverts Carnival Dream Cruise Ship To Belize

Belize tourism operators got a welcome surprise today when the Carnival Dream cruise ship with more than three thousand passengers pulled into Belize after being diverted from planned ports of call by Hurricane Earl.

The Carnival Dream, which departed from Port Canaveral on Friday had its itinerary altered by Carnival Cruise Lines due to Hurricane Earl which is currently tearing through the Caribbean headed for the U.S. East Coast.

Instead of sailing its planned Eastern Caribbean cruise with stops in Nassau, St. Thomas and St. Maarten, the ship siwtched to the Western Caribbean route to visit Cozumel, Belize, Roatan and Costa Maya. The Carnival Dream arrived in Belize today bringing much needed business, according to local radio station reports monitored in Belize.

Belize offers many beach and inland activities for cruise ship passengers, including ancient Mayan Ruins and Cave Tubing.

Belize Placencia Peninsula Wants Cruise Ships To Stay Away

A movement is building strength in Belize as citizens and environmental groups mobilize to thwart an attempt by Royal Caribbean to bring cruise tourism and trinket shops to southern Belize. The Placencia Tour Operators Association this week sent out a well researched list of reasons why it believes cruise tourism would be a disaster for the village and surrounding 27-mile-long sandy peninsula, which thrives on overnight tourism who visit for diving, snorkeling and beach-going in a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere.

Noting that its members voted this week to oppose cruise tourism, the association said cruise ship tourists would have a detrimental effect on its traditional overnight tourist business, which has “known economic benefits … outweighing possible economic benefits from cruise tourism.” [Read more...]

Actor Morgan Freeman Joins Fight To Ban Belize Offshore Oil Drilling

Actor Morgan Freeman has come out in support of an initiative by citizens of Belize to oppose offshore oil drilling in the Belize Barrier Reef which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The government of Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow has so far declined to impose a ban on offshore drilling in the wake of the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Belize derives the majority of its foreign exchange earnings from eco friendly tourism on the Belize Barrier Reef, the largest in the western hemisphere, and a considerable source of marine products such as lobster, shrimp and fish which is exported to the U.S.A. by Belize fishing cooperatives.
